Digital media have given rise to new potential markets for writers. Not only do the online versions of traditional newspapers and magazines require content, a far greater number of online-only publications need original content. Also, audience demand is growing for digital publications designed for portable devices such as music players, smart phones, eBook readers, and tablet computers.
In some cases, these new distribution methods have little effect on writing. A novel is still a novel, regardless of delivery method. However, digital distribution has increased the demand for shorter works that can be read conveniently in minutes or hours, not days. We expect digital formats to include multimedia content in coming years, which will change the nature of some writing.
